Toll Group Embarks On Infrastructure Transformation with Hitachi Data Systems

Hitachi Data Systems, a wholly owned subsidiary of Hitachi, Ltd. (TSE: 6501), today announced that it has partnered with Toll Group to consolidate, upgrade and rationalise Toll’s data storage infrastructure to support the growing company over the next five years.

Toll Group is the Asia Pacific region’s leading provider of transport and logistics, employing more than 45,000 people across some 1,200 locations in more than 50 countries. A period of acquisitions had resulted in disparate storage infrastructure, posing a strain on legacy IT systems and impacting application performance.

Following a thorough review of available options, Toll Group determined Hitachi Data Systems was best suited to support its strategy, meeting key requirements for ease of migration, opportunity to achieve 24/7 uptime, and the ability to efficiently run current and future business critical applications.

The infrastructure solution comprised Hitachi Virtual Storage Platform (VSP), Hitachi Command Suite and Hitachi NAS Platform (HNAS). Hitachi Command Suite, integrated with Hitachi Dynamic Tiering (HDT), let Toll use the market-differentiating feature of storage virtualisation for a simplified migration.

Toll has seen a number of benefits since implementing the HDS platform. David Hyland, head of Infrastructure, Development and Implementation, Global Information Systems at Toll Group says: “This has been one of those rare projects where you set out to do something and achieve it in a set timeframe, on budget and without major issues. The Hitachi team was a great support and ensured that we had zero interruptions to our business.”

He adds: “The change was cost-neutral, but we achieved significant performance, scale and reliability improvements over previous systems. In one instance backup elapsed time had reduced from 12 hours to four.”

Neil Evans, country manager and vice president, Hitachi Data Systems Australia and New Zealand, says: “Not only can Toll now scale and react to business demand, but the HDS solutions have given Toll a foundation for future storage solutions, allowing for better operational efficiency and business continuity.”

Toll already completed an extension to the original project with a capacity increase in 2012 and is currently expanding the solution to its core networking infrastructure to meet the growing needs of its business.
